ContraFlame® C20 provides weather and passive fire protection to North Sea client

The offshore Martin Linge field is operated by TOTAL in the North Sea of Norway, and Samsung Heavy Industries were awarded the contract for the topside build.

The project required both weather protection and H60 passive fire protection for 40 multi cable transit (MCT) areas. AIS provided ContraFlame® C20 thixotropic silicone to offer a complete solution.

The highlights

Fast, simple installation

Our team offered a direct application of silicone, enabling us to save valuable time.

Excellent weather & fire protection

By using ContraFlame® MS400 for underdeck and ContraFlame® C20 for MCT we were able to offer an all-in-one solution. This provided weather protection for the clients’ MCT areas and passive fire protection up to H60.

Best material for congested areas

AIS provided a quick fit solution using the first pump in place silicone of its kind.

Solution

Samsung Heavy Industries were awarded the contract for the topside build of the project and then awarded AIS the contract for ContraFlame® C20 thixotropic. The application requirement called for ContraFlame® C20 with a thickness of 50 mm to provide additional fire protection plus weather protection.

We conducted an in-house fire test for H60 protection to verify the performance of the C20 materials. This resulted in a back-face temperature rise of 40 °C after 60 minutes and the material withheld integrity after 120 minutes. In this instance, third party verification was not required.

Results

ContraFlame® C20 silicone is a tried and tested offshore weather and passive fire protection solution. Its capabilities as a flexible, weatherproof product made it ideal for protecting against the challenging saline, marine environment. The application was unique in that it is the first pump in place silicone of its kind, providing a direct application of silicone that does not slump when applied to a structure at 50 mm thick.

Critically, we provided the same quick fit solution that can be applied to complex structures without the need for mould tooling.
