MS400 PFP underdeck panel system installed at Mariner field for Equinor

Our team worked with Equinor to provide an all-in-one passive fire protection (PFP) solution for the underdeck of the Mariner oil field located offshore in the North Sea.The customer had four main requirements to ensure the protective system could match their needs for what is one of the largest new offshore field developments of the last decade. It would need to offer passive fire protection to protect their asset, provide insulation, be lightweight to reduce running costs, and withstand the harsh conditions of the North Sea.Our MS400 system provided an ideal solution.

The highlights

Weight saving solution

The area requiring protection was around 6,000 m². Our solution reduced the weight of the protected underdeck area by nearly 80%.

High levels of protection

In addition to thermal insulation, MS400 provides H60 and J15 fire protection, and mitigates against the risk of corrosion.

Corrosion protection

Alternative systems typically use steel plates that come away during wave slam, leading to corrosion underneath.

Solution

MS400 was chosen for the underdeck as it has a very low density of 80 kg/m³, and provides thermal insulation and passive fire protection in a single solution. Its H60 and J15 fire protection properties are critical as the system needs to ensure a safe exit for personnel in the event of an emergency. These attributes, combined with its resilience against harsh weather conditions that are typical in the North Sea, and water resistance to prevent corrosion under insulation (CUI), made it the ideal solution for the customers’ needs.

Results

Our MS400 panel system was easy to fit to the underdeck and will require no maintenance. It was cut to size and shape using hand tools and bonded directly to the steel, making application rapid whilst minimising disruption. Finished with joint-less, seamless D2004 laminate for excellent weather resistance, the customer received a system like no other.Although underdeck insulation is often applied within crawl spaces with reduced access, MS400 can be applied with minimal workspace required. As a result, MS400 installation did not impact the customer’s workflow. In total, over 6,000 m² of ContraFlame® MS400 panels were installed on the Mariner project. This saved around 50% in weight when compared to traditional cladding-based solutions.

Customer feedback

“It was clear that ContraFlame® MS400 had significant advantages over other external PFP systems, notably these include the fact it is relatively easy to fit, extremely light, highly resistant to damage and simple to construct.” – Lead Architectural Engineer, Mariner project.
