AIS Manuplas® opens its doors on National Manufacturing Day

AIS Manuplas® was excited and proud to welcome students to our Plymouth facility last week to support National Manufacturing Day for the second year running.

To acknowledge National Manufacturing Day 2023, we hosted students from a local sixth form, providing a tour of our factory and more.

The team in Plymouth then showed the group how we design and manufacture our marine (Manuplas) and leisure (Hippo Leisure) products. As always, we finished with a bit of fun; each student guessed the weight of one of our small mooring buoys with an AIS goody bag up for grabs for the closest weight!

National Manufacturing Day is an opportunity to provide valuable insight to future generations who get to learn about potential careers in our sector. This is vital to the success of UK manufacturing, so it was satisfying to have an enthusiastic group in our facility. Here is what General Manager, Pete Luscombe had to say:

“It was great to share our passion for manufacturing and showcase our processes and products with an engaged and enthusiastic group from years 12 and 13. With the current shortage of skills in manufacturing, it is vital our industry promotes the capabilities and wide range of opportunities available in this sector to influence and attract our future workforce. What better way to do this than to invite them in so they can experience these processes first-hand?”

Louis Croome (Manuplas, Project Design Engineer) comments:

“The students had a taste of the full journey from conceptual design using CAD through to seeing the various stages of manufacturing, including all the sounds, sights and smells which come with a busy shop floor!”

Luke Branca (Faculty Leader: Open Faculty - Notre Dame School and St Boniface's Catholic College, Plymouth):

“The visit to AIS Manuplas gave students a brilliant insight into how an industry-leading manufacturing company works. Information about the design and manufacture of products and the employment opportunities available was invaluable and the tour of the shop floor was engaging and informative. Students left the site inspired and found the visit extremely beneficial, from both an educational and career perspective. Thank you.”
