Cable Protection Repair System: A field-proven solution for offshore wind
A few years into operation, the owners of an offshore wind farm in the North Sea, off the coast of Germany, encountered some unexpected issues. During routine turbine inspections, they discovered failures in several (competitor) cable protection systems (CPS) that protect the cables connecting to the offshore substation (OSS). Concerned about the implications of these failures, the owners approached us for a solution to repair the system.
The highlights
Retrofit solution
Designed for in-situ diver assisted deployment, it is installed directly over damaged cables without the removing of damaged CPS components.
Enhanced durability
Made from API 17L certified polymer material, it offers exceptional resistance to abrasion and fatigue, providing long-term reliability in dynamic environments.
Field proven custom design
Featuring split design of two half shells, it seamlessly integrates over the bellmouth and covers the damaged section of any third-party CPS.
Solution
To address this challenge, we developed the innovative Cable Protection Repair System (CPRS). It is specifically designed to interface seamlessly with both the J-tube and the broken bend restrictor type CPS. The CPS had all originally been provided by another manufacturer. Our solution featured a retrofit design that could be installed directly over the damaged CPS subsea, without needing to remove the existing cable or the failed CPS components.
The CPRS takes the form of a dynamic bending limiter with a unique split design. The design consists of two half shells that fit over the bellmouth and cover the damaged CPS section. Made from API 17L certified materials for maximum durability, the system was engineered for efficient in-situ installation with diver assistance. The CPRS can be designed to interface with various J-tubes and third-party CPS making it a versatile option for offshore wind farms.
Result
The multiple CPRS projects have been successfully installed subsea, allowing the turbines to continue to function for the rest of their design life. Impressed by the performance and ease of installation, the customers have returned to us for assistance with subsequent CPS failures on different turbines.
