AIS provides winterisation solution for sewage treatment plant

Our client, a sewage treatment plant in Litchfield, required winterisation of pipework and valves to ensure their smooth operation during the approaching winter months. The concern was that when left unprotected, the pipes would freeze, and ice would cause them to expand, potentially leading to costly repair work and extensive downtime. Both insulating and weather resistant, AIS ContraFlex® jackets were chosen as the ideal solution for protecting essential equipment from the elements.

EDF continue to trust AIS to repair and replace turbine fleet insulation jackets

PFP helps maintain operations in the Arctic

Operating in arctic temperatures, our customer has three gravity-based structures (GBS) with LNG and condensate storage in the hull. Each structure needed protection to ensure it would remain operational and exceed health and safety requirements. We recommended that the GBS have winterisation and acoustic protection that met fire and blast criteria and would exceed health and safety requirements.

AIS delivers a combined PFP and jacket solution

Samsung Heavy Industries provided a unique challenge. They required cold conservation jackets in combination with passive fire protection (PFP) for jet fire scenarios for up to 15 minutes. We fully scoped the liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility, which is located offshore near Malaysia, in order to provide the most effective solution.

The challenge

Our team had to provide a solution which incorporated two concepts and combine them into one standalone product. Further to this, the application of these types of jackets was relatively new for AIK, thereby significant technical research was required to produce the best solution.

Our solution

Our proposed solution consisted of cryogenic insulation, Cryogel Z, in conjunction with our PFP jackets. The Cryogel Z insulation is installed using foil tape and vapour barriers as per the Aspen Aerogel recommended application procedure.

Our advantage

Aspen Aerogel provided Cryogel Z which has a lower k-value than other insulation materials on the market. Using it resulted in less material needed for the same desired effect.

Quick and easy installation of complex solution achieved

The solution provided was very well received by Samsung Heavy Industries who were pleased with the overall quality and finish of the product. The quick and easy installation of our product was important for Samsung Heavy Industries. Being able to train their employees to perform this activity in the future was a key consideration.

Other highlights

Our JF 45 jackets have a weather protection layer and have been tested to provide up to 120 minutes of jet fire protection and operate efficiently at all temperatures, including extreme cold environments. The Velcro hook and loop tape design allows for continued usage of the jackets during and after maintenance checks, an important feature for the customer. The solution provided was very well received by Samsung Heavy Industries and they were pleased with the overall quality and finish of the product. They were impressed with how AIK managed to combine two different technologies to provide one homogeneous solution.
