What is bend and fatigue protection?
- Bend and fatigue protection helps control excessive bending, movement and vibration in subsea cables, umbilicals, risers, flexible pipelines and flowlines. These solutions help manage mechanical stresses that can contribute to damage or fatigue during installation and operation.
Why is bend protection important for subsea infrastructure?
- Subsea cables, flexible pipelines and umbilicals can experience movement and bending where they connect to structures or pass through critical transition zones. Controlling the bend radius helps prevent excessive curvature, overbending and associated damage.
What is the difference between a bend stiffener and a bend restrictor?
- Bend restrictors and bend stiffeners both help control bending, but are typically suited to different applications. Bend restrictors are more commonly used in static or fixed installations, where they mechanically limit bending beyond a specified radius. Bend stiffeners are typically used in dynamic applications, providing a gradual increase in stiffness to control curvature and bending stresses as the cable, umbilical or riser moves.
How do cable protection systems protect offshore cables?
- Cable protection systems provide bend, fatigue and abrasion protection at critical locations, including the transition between a cable and offshore structure. NjordGuard and NjordShield are designed for applications including monopiles and J-tubes, helping protect cables during installation and throughout their service life.
What is vortex inducedvibration (VIV)?
- Vortex induced vibration occurs when fluid flow around a subsea pipeline or riser creates alternating vortices. If the resulting vibration approaches the natural frequency of the structure, repeated movement can contribute to fatigue. VIV strakes are used to disrupt vortex shedding and suppress this vibration.
What are VIV strakes used for?
- VIV strakes are fitted to subsea pipelines and risers to reduce vibration caused by vortex shedding. The product range includes Tri-Strakes® Combi, Lite and Stinger configurations, providing different approaches to VIV suppression for offshore applications.
Can bend and fatigue protection systems be customised?
- Yes. Solutions can be designed around application-specific requirements such as cable or pipeline diameter, minimum bend radius, loads, environmental conditions and installation method. Bend Restrictors, for example, are available in standardised configurations as well as bespoke designs.
Can damaged cable protection systems be repaired subsea?
- Yes. The Cable Protection Repair System (CPRS) is designed to reinforce or repair failed cable protection systems in J-tube applications. Its split design can be installed in situ over the existing system without removing the cable or damaged components.
